Waste Knights: Second Edition is a post-apocalyptic adventure game of survival set in dystopian Australia of the future. Each player controls a bold character facing rampaging gangs, mutants, self-aware machines, and doom cults, while trying to achieve their goals. The game is scenario-based, with different plots exploring various game mechanics from point-to-point delivery, through resource- and dice-management to pure choose-your-own-adventure stories supported by the Book of Tales, which contains hundreds of pages of engaging RPG-like narrative.
Thanks to its success, the Waste Knights: Second Edition product line is growing and evolving. The game has been translated into multiple languages from its Polish original, and with the setting and the fan base continuing to grow, the publisher Galakta released in 2022 a first expansion, Tales From the Outback and now follows up with a new, massive expansion Beyond The Horizon.
Beyond the Horizon represents for the base WK2 game what the movie "Waterworld" was to the "Mad Max" series – we will leave Australia behind and reveal a wholly different facet of the post-apocalyptic genre. Its most advanced game mechanics revolve around a new Sea Board featuring six Destinations: Tasmania, New Guinea, New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, the floating Trash City, and the mysterious Project X. Players can charter a ship – one of 11 unique vessels found in the Ship Deck – and sail far away to explore places unvisited since the world ended. Before reaching these destinations, however, they must face all kinds of threats represented by Sea Cards– mutated aquatic creatures, pirates, ghost ships, abandoned oil rigs, horrible storms… Some challenges will even require players to gain a special Aquatic trait to stand a chance against certain underwater dangers!
Of course, the longer the route, the more dangerous it becomes. Good preparation for a cruise (and some luck rolling custom Sea Dice for additional threats) will be crucial for survival. But rewards will surely be worth the trouble.
Another completely new aspect of the expansion is giving the game an even deeper survival and resource-management system. The base game required players to wisely manage three resources: Ammo, Fuel and Meds. Now, time has come to take care of fresh Water represented by 12 plastic markers – otherwise your knight will have to draw a Dehydration Card from the deck, and the longer they are without water, the worse things will get.
The heart of Waste Knights: Second Edition has always been adventure and great, original stories. You will find many in the expansion thanks to its Guide featuring six completely new scenarios, with two narrative and four in a sandbox format. The new way of presenting the content guarantees even more replayability and flexibility, with players choosing the length, goal, and difficulty of the game as well as its mode–cooperative, competitive, team, or solo play. This, in conjunction with the Book of Tales containing over 700 pages of narrative text, ensures many hours of great fun and thrilling action.
To brave the Toxic Seas, you might want to look for someone who is no mere landlubber, but a real sea wolf. That is why the expansion contains four new knights prepared to face all marine threats. Now, you can become a mutated Assault Marine, a Pirate, a Trader, or a Māori Chieftain, and prove your worth on board a ship.
Of course, there are also new Wasteland, Gear and Upgrade Cards, new vehicles, special tokens enabling you to modify the threat bag and many other surprises, but you will discover them once you get your copy of the expansion. Thanks to its extensive content, Beyond the Horizon guarantees tons of immersive and challenging gameplay, and we hope you will want to join the great voyage.
