UKGE Awards: Judges Choice announced.

Ares Games is proud to announce that Cangaceiros and War of the Ring The Card Game - Against the Shadow are the winners of the 2024 UK Games Expo Judges Choice Awards in the "Best Board Game (Strategic)" and "Best Expansion" categories, respectively. Each year the UKGE Awards Judges play, replay, assess, discuss and finally decide on the shortlisted games as best in 19 categories - this year, UKGE received over 400 submissions. They also pick a Judge's Winner in each category, which were announced today, May 7th, and will be awarded on 30th May, the day before the show opening. Click here to see all the winners.

Cangaceiros: winner of the Judges Choice award as Best Board Game (Strategic).

Designed by Roberto Pestrin and developed by Ergo Ludo Editions, Cangaceiros is a strategic competitive game set in Brazil in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The English edition is published by Ares Games. Feared throughout the Brazilian northeast, the "cangaceiros" were bandits who fight for honor and freedom, standing against the abuses of large landowners called Coronéis and the government. In the game, each player plays a gang that tries to survive in the hostile desert territories, hunted by the Volantes, the state police trained to kill them. Each band has a chief to choose from the 20 available, each with its own abilities and characteristics.

Against the Shadow is the solo and cooperative expansion for War of the Ring - The Card Game, designed by Ian Brody. The game immerses players (2 to 4) in the quest of The Lord of the Rings, allowing them to explore their own version of the trilogy, using uniquely designed card decks representing the strengths and weaknesses of the peoples and characters who fought in the War of the Ring. Each player controls one or more of the factions, either on the side of the Free Peoples or of the Shadow Armies. The expansion Against the Shadow allows to play the game alone or with a friend, with all-new Shadow cards adapted to use with a simple flowchart, enabling the player(s) to command the Free Peoples against the Shadow bots.

The UK Games Expo Awards recognize and celebrate quality and excellence in new games and products in the Tabletop Games marketplace in a variety of game genres. After being submitted by exhibitors, all games are rated by a panel of judges chosen by UK Games Expo. The short lists are selected according to the judge's ratings, and UKGE invites the public to vote their favorite games to win the UKGE People's Award. Voting opens on Friday 31st May, through the UK Games Expo website, using the expo account, or at the show, using the handy interactive screens in the awards space, in hall 3.The winners of the People's Choice Awards will be announced on Sunday, 2nd June, on the main stage.
