The first Italian gathering of Wings of Glory fans was held at Play Festival del Gioco, at Modena, on April 2nd-3rd. Four scenarios, two for WW1 and two for WW2, organized by the game clubs "Quelli di Aerodrome," Associazione Ludica Apuana, and WArgames SPezia, gathered about ten players each session. Many people, both wargame fans and families attending the convention, stopped by to watch the games.
The author, Andrea Angiolino, was present and took part to the event, and as one of the guests of honor at Play 2016, where he also presented the original prototypes of Wings of War (the previous incarnation of the game), dating back to 2002.
On Saturday morning, the German jets couldn't stop the six American B-17 "Flying Fortresses" and their escort, during the scenario "Bats out of Hell" - which pits the special fighter Jagdverband 44 (JV 44 - self-constructed by the event organizers) against a formation of B17s bombing southern airports in Germany, in March 1945. In the afternoon, the WW1 scenario of the Italian Caproni Ca.3 bomber attack on the Trieste port was successful, and the Austro-Hungarian armored ship Budapest was wrecked.
On Sunday morning, Fokker D.VII and Siemens-Schuckert DIII fighters destroyed most of the Handley-Page 0/400 during the dawn bombing raid on Mannhein, in May 1918. Even if two plants were lost, it was a tactical victory for the Germans.
The WW2 scenario "Crossbow Operation" was played in the afternoon, and the Axis' fighters were not able to prevent the Lancaster bombers from destroying the V-1 flying bombs and V-2 rockets launch sites.
Ares Games thanks the members of "Quelli di Aerodrome," Associazione Ludica Apuana, and WArgames SPezia, the author Andrea Angiolino, and all players who took part to the sessions. See below some pictures of the game at Play 2016.
