Players who attended BGG.Con 2013 could see and try Sails of Glory during the convention in demos held by Steven Duke. An experienced Wings of Glory player, he also demoed the aerial combat game in WW1 and WW2 version at the con, with the help of his brother, Kevin Duke. This was the first time Steven demoed Sails of Glory, but in his first game at BGG.Con, he got help from Dean Sestak, who was in the Ares Games demo team at Gencon.
The Sails of Glory demos were held in the main gaming room and, generally, there were six ships on the board at a time - two frigates and a ship-of-the-line for each side. Steven explains they played a modified basic game with some additions from the standard rules, including raking fire and maneuver planning one turn ahead. "I generally went over some of the other rules, like grappling and boarding, the importance of crews and what they can do for damage control, and things like shore batteries and coastal things. But with first time players--and as a first time demo guy--I wanted to keep it simple.”
According to him, table talk and foot traffic folks were very excited at the look and durability of the miniatures and how cleanly the game played. About 20 people sat down for the demos and approximately 100 stopped by to look in and ask questions.
Wings of Glory also gathered both newbies and veterans players in the demo sessions held in the main hall. Attendees had the chance to fly with the latest fighters released - Hanriot HD.I, Aviatik D.I, Sopwith Triplane, and Siemens-Schuckert D.III for WW1, and Focke-Wulf FW-190, Spitfire Mk.IX, North American P-51 D Mustang, and Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate for WW2.
