The SPAD XIII was a French biplane, development of the SPAD S.VII, and it was one of the most capable fighters of the war and one of the most widely employed. The single-engine SPAD XIII was particularly noted for its robust construction and its ability to dive at high speed, features that made it one of the best dog-fighting airplanes of the war. This aircraft was flown especially by French squadrons, but also by British, Italian, Belgian, Russians, and American pilots that were part of American Expeditionary Force.
SPAD XIII (Rickenbaker)
Eddie Rickenbacker became a fighter pilot and was assigned to the 94th Aero Pursuit Squadron, accumulating 26 air victories and numerous decorations, including the Medal of Honor.
SPAD XIII (Fonck)
René P. Fonck was the highest scoring ace for France and the Allies and he was the fastest pilot in shooting down three airplanes in less than ten seconds.
SPAD XIII (Chavannes)
Sous Lieutenant Fernand Henri Chavannes was a World War I flying ace, credited with seven aerial victories, and a first class pursuit pilot.
